A wonderful description of this beautiful wedding from Diana, the bride: My husband and I are longtime urbanites, but both grew up in greener and more wide open spaces. When thinking about the setting for our wedding, we quickly decided we wanted something pastoral, surrounded by the simple beauty of nature. We also knew that we wanted a setting that was cozy, rustic, and inviting – a place where our guests could feel romantic and whimsical, but also entirely laid back and at home. With these things in mind, we started looking for venues with a barn in and around upstate New York – a land with soft mountains, lush foliage, and stunning vistas. It only took one visit for us to fall in love with Stable Gate Winery. As our officiant, a dear friend, would later express during our ceremony: one side is surrounded by wildflower fields – spontaneous and joyful – and another by a vineyard – a place of labor, planning, care, and reward. A partnership should have both of those elements, and as such it was an ideal place to begin and celebrate our marriage.

With the classic, barn venue we were looking for, we also wanted to add some contemporary touches. From day one, I knew I wanted my bridal party to wear fresh flower crowns. However, I thought, “why limit the floral adornment?” My close girlfriends and I have a tradition we’ve titled “LaDay” (pronounced lay-day) where we spend a day together crafting, drinking, and doing a Secret Santa-style gift swap for no occasion other than to celebrate each other and friendship. Creating flower crowns from craft store garlands has been a staple in our LaDay activities, and I figured I could take that model to our wedding. Two of my bridesmaids – also LaDay regulars – and I made flower crowns for the reception, hoping and wishing that guests would embrace the spirit of celebration, whimsy, and flower-child attitude. On top of that, we thought glow sticks and temporary tattoos – custom designed by another dear friend and artist – would only add to the enjoyment and carefree vibes of our guests. Our venue manager started referring to our wedding as a “rustic rave,” which felt was an appropriate harmony of the roots that inspired us and the modern flare that entertains us.

Rachel and I  became friends in photo school at RIT more than a decade ago, so when she asked me to photograph her destination wedding in Big Sky, Montana, I was ecstatic and truly honored. Rachel and Chris got married with a beautiful morning sand ceremony at Rainbow Ranch, followed by an intimate brunch reception with their closest family and friends who flew in from all over the country. The day before was also filled with fun activities: riding horses through gorgeous Montana wilderness, a celebratory dinner, cozy bonfire, and later, everyone had on their favorite cowboy boots to dance the night away in. I joined Rachel and Chris for two days of their week-long destination wedding celebration and when we parted ways, I went camping in Glacier National Park while they headed to Yellowstone National Park for more awesome adventures.

Adirondack Mountains Upstate NY Wedding Weekend: Melissa + Bino

Cycling enthusiasts Melissa and Bino had a bicycle-themed wedding in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York at the groom’s family’s country home. I loved rowing boats to their intimate, boat house rehearsal dinner the evening before the wedding. The next day, they tied the knot in a field of wildflowers, surrounded by friends and family. One of my favorite moments of the weekend was watching Melissa pull off their bike ride getaway in her long gown!

Bordeaux France Engagement: Daina + Olivier

Daina and Oliver are adventurous world travelers and oenophiles. Daina, originally from Arizona, and her fiance, from nearby Bergerac, France, wanted to have their fun and relaxed engagement session in the town they both love and now call home, Bordeaux. I absolutely loved Bordeaux and never thought I could fall harder for another French city more than Paris, but… I did! I think that had a lot to do with Daina and Olivier. They were such gracious hosts, and showed me places I might never have found on my own, including across the river where Olivier works, in the Darwin-eco-systeme, old military barracks turned eco-friendly coworking space. The music was great, the beer was cold (I know right, drinking beer in the wine capitol of the world, but don’t worry we drank plenty of wine together too), and I loved the light installation showing energy consumption of the two connected buildings. (Check it out here.) Bordeaux has the charm of a small city and the art, culture, and conveniences of a large one. It’s a mix of preserved, old world beauty with amazing modern designs and architecture. The next day we went to the Dune of Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe, it was awesome. Their engagement session was shot exclusively on medium format Fujifilm with a Contax 645, and thanks to Richard Photo Lab for the beautiful scans. I just had such a great time with them and can’t wait to photograph their wedding in a French chateau next July!

My little sister is getting married!! I photographed her with my wonderful future brother Marc in his hometown of Florence and the surrounding Tuscan countryside. They met in a New York City laundromat where he almost burned his clothes in the dryer while working up the courage to ask her out. My family and I not only love him, but we also love his family, so I have a feeling it’s going to be an extra special weekend. One of my favorite people in this world, Sir Francis Schwartz, will be marrying them while performing an original work of avant-garde, audience participation, musical theater, which he’s currently composing just for the occasion… I can’t wait for their wedding in Chianti, Italy next summer.

From the dreamy countryside of Burgundy, France, where stunning estates and mustard fields decorate the expansive landscape, I photographed this inspiration wedding editorial at the Chateau de Varennes while attending the Sylvie Gil Workshop.
